Looking after yourself Post-16

When you’ve left school, it’s important to know how to look after your physical and emotional health and where to get support. ​For example, contacting a doctor, dentist, optician or visiting a pharmacy.

​Your doctor (GP)

You can contact your GP by:​

  • Phone
  • Online forms on the practice website ​
  • The NHS App​
  • Search ‘find my NHS Number’​

GPs can help with:​

  • New health problems​
  • Long term conditions​
  • Mental health​
  • Sexual health​
  • Vaccinations​
  • Repeat prescriptions​
  • For urgent but non-emergency care, call 111.

If you are not registered to a GP you can sign up on this link.  You can find your NHS number here and you will need your full name, date of birth, and home postcode that’s registered with the doctor’s surgery.   

Pharmacies

See your pharmacist first for a range of support including collecting medicines, prescribing and selling medicines or direct you to a GP or other services if necessary.​

You can also see the pharmacist for:​

  • Coughs/ colds/ sore throat​
  • UTIs and Cystitis​
  • Hayfever​
  • Contraception and emergency contraception​
  • Skin conditions

Dentists

NHS dentists are free for young people up to the age of 18 and in full time education, after that you may need to pay. ​

​You can get an emergency dentist if you’re not registered. If you need to register, you can find your nearest one here.  ​

​Dentists can help with:​

Tooth pain​
Braces referrals​
Check-ups​
Gum problems​
For urgent dental issues, contact 111 by phone or online.

​There are specialist dentists who treat people with additional needs but you need a general dentist to refer you.

Emotional health and wellbeing

There is a lot of support out there including:

ChatHealth – A text messaging service that directly contacts a Community Public Health Nurse for advice and signposting to other services in your area.

Text 07507 332160 Monday-Friday 08:30am-4:30pm (excluding bank holidays).  

You can also refer yourself in to the Community Public Health Nursing Service using this form.

Kooth – a web-based service for young people’s emotional wellbeing up to the age of 25.  

CAMHS – Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service is available for various mental health support and therapies including anxiety, low mood and OCD. 

Sexual Health  

Sexual health clinics are a confidential space with trained health care professionals for:​

Contraception​
STI testing​
Pregnancy testing​
PrEP and PEP medication ​
Judgement free advice and guidance. ​

Local services include Let’s Talk About It, Brook and via your doctor.

LGBT+ Support 

Support around sexuality and gender identity doesn’t just end once you leave school, there’s lots of organisations specifically for young people who can support you.

Stonewall Young Futures – A hub for all young people who would like some support taking the next steps into adulthood.

Barnardo’s Positive Identities Service offers 1 to 1, small groups and therapeutic support.

Breakout Youth currently offers group-based support to LGBTQ+ young people in Southampton, New Milton, Marchwood, Basingstoke, Andover and on The Isle of Wight.
