Ten Wishes – what young people in Plymouth want from health care

Livewell Southwest works with other organisations in Plymouth to keep children and young people safe. Young people, like you, told us how they want health and care professionals to engage with them and came up with their Ten Wishes.

Members of the Young Safeguarders designed their own poster and helped us bring it to life by recording their wishes for the soundtrack for a video.

We’re committed to making those Ten Wishes come true. We’ve made sure that everyone at Livewell knows what these wishes are, and how we can deliver them in all our work with young people and families.

Our wish now is to share the Ten Wishes across all the organisations we work with. That way, you’ll be included and involved, treated with respect and listened to at every contact, just as you should be.

This is what we’ve done so far to make the wishes come true:

  • We regularly review ourselves to make sure we’re sticking to the Ten Wishes
  • We’ve made everyone at Livewell aware of our commitment to fulfil the Ten Wishes through banners, screensavers and newsletters
  • Our progress on fulfilling the Ten Wishes is discussed at every meeting of the children’s service strategic operational group
  • Our children’s mental health services are using the Ten Wishes
  • Our speech and language therapy service is focussing on one wish a month to highlight the importance of each and every one
  • Our health visitors include the Ten Wishes in their induction for new colleagues
  • Our school nursing service has added Ten Wishes to its commitment on how they communicate with young people
  • Our dental service now asks children over 12 years old to sign a consent form, to increase their involvement in their treatment
