Now is the time to remember how important our mouths are…We need them. Without them how do we Eat, Talk or Smile with confidence? What can we do to keep our smile healthy?
As things are returning to normal our mouth care should do too. As this is National Smile Month, it’s a great time to start.
Brushing plaque from teeth and gums twice a day for 3 minutes with a family fluoride toothpaste. Not only does the fluoride protect our teeth from tooth decay, but the action of brushing the gum line and removing plaque helps to prevent gum disease, which can lead to bleeding gums and tooth loss if not treated.
Limit the amount of sugar you have and when you have it. If you do have a sugary snack or drink choose to save these to just after a meal time as a treat, this and choosing a healthier snack, or water or milk between meals not only help prevent you getting decay but can also help your body stay healthy. Always think, if this is not good for my mouth, then what’s it doing to my body. Don’t eat too much sugar too many times!
Going back to the dentist twice a year. Guess what, it is free until you are 18
Dentists are now open for business and are looking forward to seeing you. Looking after your mouth is your responsibility as most of us only see a dentist every 6 months, but even though it can seem scary, having a check-up is for your benefit. Not only can a dentist tell you if you have any problems with your teeth, gums and the surrounding areas, they are also looking out for your general health.
Have a look at the diagram below, this shows how NOT looking after you mouth can have an impact on your general health.
