Introducing Bradford School Nursing Special Needs Team

Language around special needs can mean different things to different people. In Bradford, our team follows on from the Health Visiting Team to support children and young people aged 4-19y who are attending specialist schools across Bradford, focusing on individual strengths, wellbeing, and inclusive care. This includes people with a wide range of additional needs such as physical, learning, social, emotional, and mental health needs.

We are a specialist team made up of admin support, health care support workers, Learning Disability Nurses, Children’s Nurses and General Nurses. The team is run by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust (BDCFT) and can offer advice and support all year round, so even in the school holidays.

What things do the team do?

  • Complete health assessments with the family before people start or have just started school to look at health needs. This is to ensure that people could be supported to access school.
  • Write care plans for people who need them and update these yearly- or sooner if needed.
  • Provide school staff and other professionals staff training to enable them to support their students.
  • Offer health promotion sessions within schools and sometimes might be at events in the community
  • Offer immunisation preparation and desensitisation work to support people in having their immunisations to keep them healthy.
  • Support clinics in schools for Paediatricians, Children and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHS) and dietitians, so that people don’t have to miss time at school.
  • They might sometimes be at parents’ evenings and coffee mornings in schools
