LGBT+ History Month

The event is honoured in February to coincide with the abolition of Section 28 in 2003.

LGBT+ History Month is a celebration during February of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and gender diverse history, including the history of LGBT+ rights and related civil rights movements.

In the UK, the event is honoured in February to coincide with the abolition of Section 28 in 2003, which prohibited the “promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities.

The purpose of LGBT+ History Month is to raise awareness of the LGBT+ community’s history and promote equality and inclusion.

With so many people unaware of LGBT+ events and important historical figures, let’s use February 2023 to highlight to those around us the importance of LGBT+ history.

You can find out more about its history at https://lgbtplushistorymonth.co.uk/

The theme for LGBT+ History Month 2023 is ‘Behind the Lens’ and aims to celebrate LGBT+ people’s contribution to cinema and film from behind the lens.

This includes directors, cinematographers, screen writers, producers, animators, costume designers, special effects, make-up artists, lighting directors, musicians, choreographers and beyond.

At a time when LGBT+ lives are in the media we encourage you to look ‘Behind the Lens’ and listen to LGBT+ peoples’ lived experiences.
