Travelling around Bradford? Here’s a quick and common sense guide to staying safe no matter how you choose to get from place to place.

Bradford’s a vibrant city with lots of exciting places to visit and plenty of ways to get around, but with over 200 children and young people seriously hurt and injured on the roads in our district every year, it is vitally important that young people use the roads and travel safely, whether by car, walking to meet friends, riding an e-scooter, or hopping on a bus. Here’s a quick and common sense guide to staying safe no matter how you choose to get from place to place.
In the car
Cars are a convenient and common way to get around – follow these tips for passengers, or if you’re planning to drive when you’re older:
- Seatbelts: always wear your seatbelt, even if you’re just going a short distance. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay safe in the car.
- Don’t distract the driver: avoid distracting the driver by talking too much, playing loud music, or using your phone.
- Be aware of your surroundings: always pay attention to pedestrians and cyclists when you’re in the car. The roads can be busy, and it’s important to be mindful.
On foot
Bradford has a lot of great places to explore, and walking is one of the best ways to see it all up close. But it’s essential to stay aware of your surroundings. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Crossing the road safely: always use pedestrian crossings. Wait for the green man or traffic lights before you step onto the road. Never run across the street without checking if it’s clear.
- Look left and right: even when crossing at a pedestrian crossing, quickly look both ways to ensure no vehicles are coming.
- Stay alert: keep your headphones off when walking near traffic or busy streets. It’s safer to be able to hear what’s going on around you.
Using an e-bike or e-scooter
E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming increasingly popular around Bradford, but there are rules and guidelines to keep you safe when using them.
- Wear a helmet: whether you’re riding an e-scooter or an e-bike, wearing a helmet is a smart idea. It can protect you if you fall or crash.
- Use bike lanes: E-scooters and e-bikes should be used in the bike lanes, not on pavements or roads unless absolutely necessary. It helps you avoid traffic and gives you more control.
- Stay in control: don’t ride too fast or recklessly. Keep an eye on your speed and always ride at a pace you can handle.
On your bike
Cycling around Bradford is a great way to get to school or meet friends, but safety is key.
- Wear a helmet: a helmet is your best protection if you fall off your bike. It might feel awkward at first, but it’s worth it.
- Signal your turns: when cycling on roads, use hand signals to indicate when you’re turning. This helps drivers and other cyclists know your intentions.
- Check your bike: before heading out, make sure your bike is in good condition. Check the brakes, tires, and lights.
- Use proper bike lanes: whenever possible, ride in designated bike lanes. It’s safer and helps prevent accidents.
Travelling by train
Train travel is one of the quickest ways to get around the city and beyond, but you still need to keep safety in mind.
- Wait behind the line: always wait behind the safety line at the train station until your train arrives.
- Mind the gap: Be careful when getting on or off the train, as there might be a gap between the platform and the train. Keep your balance and avoid rushing.
- Don’t run on platforms: Train stations can be busy, and running can lead to accidents. Walk calmly and stay aware of your surroundings.
- Follow train rules: respect others while on the train. Keep your volume down, and always sit if there’s a seat available.
On the bus
Buses are a great way to get around Bradford, especially if you don’t want to walk or bike.
- Wait at the bus stop: always wait at designated bus stops. Don’t stand in the middle of the road.
- Get on safely: when the bus arrives, wait for passengers to get off before you board. This helps avoid accidents.
- Stay seated: once you’re on the bus, sit down and hold on to the handrails if standing. Avoid walking down the aisle when the bus is moving.
- Be courteous: give up your seat to elderly people or those with disabilities. It’s just good manners and can help everyone travel more comfortably.
Extra tips for safe travel
- Stay visible: if you’re walking or cycling at night, wear bright or reflective clothing. It makes it easier for drivers to see you, especially in dark areas.
- Stay focused: avoid using your phone when crossing streets or riding your bike. Distracted walking or cycling can lead to accidents.
- Plan your route: before you travel, make sure you know the best route and how long it will take. This can prevent you from rushing or getting lost.
- Follow the rules: each mode of transport has its own rules for a reason. Always follow them, and encourage others to do the same!
Traveling safely around Bradford is not only about looking out for yourself but also considering others on the road or pavement. By following these tips, you can enjoy your journey through the city while staying safe and responsible. Whether you’re out exploring or just getting to school, travel smart, travel safe!
