Welcome to todays chat on positive mental health. January can be a time when we feel low or grumpy after the excitement of christmas. There are ways that we can cheer ourselves up and promote positive mental health.

How do you cheer yourself up when you're feeling low?

Some people feel low during the winter when it is colder and darker. This may be because sunlight causes changes in the hormone levels in our body which can make us feel tired and low in mood. It is a good idea to try and get as much sunlight as you can during the winter even though it is cold. Exercise is important and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet.

Do you feel that the winter affects your mood?

Good self esteem is important for positive mental health. Self esteem is how we view ourselves so good self esteem is when we think positive things about ourselves and deal with challenges better because of this.

To have good self esteem we need to challenge the negative thoughts about ourselves. You could write down the negative thoughts and then take the time to think about whether they are true. You could also write down the good things that people say about you and compare them to the negative list.

Positive relationships are important for good self esteem. Spend time with people who encourage you and make you feel happy.
