2. Blood tests can help to diagnose a condition, assess the health of certain organs or screen for some genetic conditions

3. Some tests mean that you can’t have anything to eat or drink for 10 hours before the test is done. This is called a fasting blood test

4. The amount of blood taken will depend on the type of test that your Doctor has asked for

5. It’s important to have a drink after the blood test

6. The phlebotomist will usually use your vein on the inside of your elbow – brachial vein or one of the back of your wrist to take the blood

7. A tight band (tourniquet) will be placed around your upper arm to help the vein fill with blood and make it easier for the blood sample to be taken

8. The skin over the vein will be cleaned with an antiseptic wipe

9. You will be offered cream or freezing spray to help numb the area

10. A butterfly needle attached to a syringe will be inserted into the vein

11. When the right amount of blood is taken the needle is removed. The small hole is pressed with gauze and if you’re ok with plasters a spot plaster is put over this

12. Blood is put into the sample bottles and then sent to the Pathology Department for testing.
